“The essence of age is intellect.”
- Emerson
Congratulations on reaching the golden years! You've worked hard all your life and now it is time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. One goal of the Ohio Treasurer's Office is to improve services and the quality of life for Ohio 's senior citizens. This aim includes providing one-stop convenience for information about homeowner assistance with government and consumer services.
SENIOR HOMEOWNER SERVICES
Monthly Property Tax Payment Programs
Real estate taxes in Ohio are due every six months. It can be a terrible burden for many seniors to come up with a large payment all at once. That is why, as an alternative, many Ohio County Treasurers offer help to homeowners in budgeting their taxes. Contact your County Treasurer for more information.
Homestead Exemption
This program provides a reduction on real estate tax bills to a Ohio homeowner who is at least age 65, or is permanently and totally disabled, or is the surviving spouse of a qualified homeowner who was at least 59 years old on the date of their spouse's death. To receive the Homestead Exemption property tax credit for property tax bills payable in 2008, individuals must apply through their county auditor's office by October 1, 2007. The normal application dates are between the first Monday in January and the first Monday in June. If you failed to apply before the deadline in 2007, you can apply late in January 2008 and still receive credit on your entire 2008 tax bill.
Board of Revision
To set up an appointment to determine if the valuation of your property is too high and should be lowered, call your County Auditor . This process has been kept simple and convenient.
Senior Citizen Property Tax Assistance Program
This program offers one-time help to low-income individuals who are age 60 or over but cannot pay their current property taxes. For more information, you can call 614-462-5229 .
Homeowners Assistance
This is a home maintenance and repair service for elderly or disabled homeowners who live in certain parts of Columbus . The Homeowners Assistance Program does “minor plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and installs deadbolt locks and smoke detectors.” For more information, call 614-645-8526 or go to their website: http://hcs.td.ci.columbus.oh.us
