Senior fraud and identity theft is a growing problem. According to the Federal Trade Commission nearly one forth of the victims of identity theft are over 50. In 2006 alone there were 1,513 senior victims which reported identity theft in Ohio. The average loss to these individuals was $3,257. These are the seniors that reported problems. Quite often family members play a role in cases such as this and the incident goes unreported.

Law enforcement officials describe identity theft as the fastest growing white collar crime in the country and the leading form of consumer fraud.

Recognizing the need to inform and protect our older population, Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray has partnered with the Ohio Department of Aging and their twelve Area Agencies on Aging to offer workshops across Ohio targeted to senior audiences and their families. Topics to be presented will include consumer fraud, identity theft and credit and debt management.

Awareness is the first step to fraud and identity theft protection. These seminars will help seniors recognize steps that they can take to protect themselves and their money so they will not become the next victim.
