How To Keep A Home Business From Taking Over Your Home Life

Now that you have successfully launched a business from home you may be finding that making money online is requiring you to spend nearly all of your waking hours hard at work. Many Americans working at home on new business ventures find that even when they are not working on their businesses they are still thinking about the tasks that need to be completed or the clients that they want to call in the morning.

While you will undoubtedly have to focus a great deal of time on your business in order to make working from home a success, you will not be able to truly enjoy the benefits of your hard work if you do not make time to spend with your family and friends. If you are a parent staying at home to supervise your children or married, it is even more important to nurture these relationships by spending time with the most important people in your life instead of becoming consumed by work.

Use A Work Schedule To Separate Your Work Life & Home Life

Using your house as your base of work operations can mean that your work hours and your time with your family blend into a constant working frenzy. Set working hours to separate your working time from the quality time that you spend with your family in order to allow yourself to focus on work while you are at work and on your family when you are done with the workday. Failing to stick your work schedule can make you feel stressed and overloaded, since you may fail to meet your responsibilities in both areas of your life.

Turn Off The Constant Updates To Focus

Focus is important, regardless of whether you are trying to put together a proposal for a client, help your daughter with her spelling homework or cook dinner. Turn off the functions on your BlackBerry, e-mail client, iPhone and other devices that set off constant alarms, chirps and other noises when someone sends you and e-mail or text message to allow you to stay on task. Set aside a block of time once or twice a day to check your e-mail instead of bouncing back and forth between your e-mail and your work all day long.

When you are done with work for the day, turn off your work e-mail or your BlackBerry to keep your work e-mail or phone calls from interfering with the time that you are spending with your family. Consider whether the phone calls are truly urgent, as well as the impact that the interruptions may have on the quality time that you are trying to enjoy with your family.

Plan For Family Time That Counts

While it is easy to say that you are spending time with your family as long as you, your spouse and your children are all watching television in the same room or even are under the same roof, the time that will truly help to bond you together is that which you spend doing activities together. As a parent working at home, it is important for you to actively pursue activities that everyone in the family can enjoy doing while interacting with each other.

Family activities can be simple outings, like playing a round of miniature golf on a summer evening or going bowling or even just playing a board game after dinner once a week. If you have older children consider soliciting suggestions from them on different activities that they might like to do as a family. Whether you are going to a baseball game or a chamber music concert, doing activities together as a family presents an opportunity to enrich your children’s lives, make your family closer and to reduce your stress as a parent working from home.

Remember To Take Care Of Yourself

In your zeal to find success as a home based business owner while taking care of your family you may not be remembering to take adequate care of yourself. Your health is a critical part of your long term success as a professional, so if you are not remembering to eat regular meals of well balanced and nutritional foods, to exercise or even attend your regular doctors’ appointments because you are focusing all of your energy on your family and new business, then you need to make yourself a greater priority.

If you have trouble remembering to make yourself a priority along with working at home and your children and spouse, then consider reaching out to a professional for assistance. A life coach or another professional may be able to help you to get the perspective that you need to keep yourself healthy and stress-free. Remember, if you do not stay healthy, then you will not be able to continue to build your new business to be even more successful, or to continue to care for your family in the future.
