Time Management

When you are working at home you are not only trying to make money but also trying to take care of your children, your house and maybe even an elderly relative or two. If you are finding yourself frustrated by having unfinished work at the end of a long day of work or not enough time to spend with your friends and relatives, then you may need to use some new time management techniques to increase your productivity while working from home.

Make Your To Do List And Keep It Up To Date

A task list of items to be accomplished each day is only good if you keep it updated with relevant items. Some professionals like to use a simple paper notepad to track their “to do” list each day while others enjoy the high tech capabilities of programs like Microsoft Outlook or the functions available on smartphones or through e-mail clients.

Whatever task list medium you select, make sure that you identify each task clearly with an activity as well as a deadline. When you complete a task remember to check it off of your list. At the end of the day, you will enjoy seeing visible proof of all of the work that you have completed, making it easier to shut down your computer and spend time with your family. If you work on something that is not on your task list you may even want to put it down as a “completed” item on your list. That way, at the end of your workday you will know how you spent all those hours working!

Remove Distractions From Your Workspace

Working from home means that you can say goodbye to your commute, wear sweatpants to your office and maybe even choose your own hours. Having a home office, though, can also present a number of challenges to staying focused while working. Depending on where your computer, desk and the rest of your workspace is located, it may be easy for you to be distracted by the television or other activity in your house.

Watching television while you are working is never a good idea, since time spent watching your show is time that you are not thinking about your work. Try limiting the time that you spend watching television each week to a certain number of hours. When you are only watching a few shows each week you will be forced to select only those shows or movies that you truly enjoy watching rather than spending hours mindlessly watching shows that you do not really care about. If you have a television in your office, take it out and put it somewhere that you can enjoy watching it during your off time. That will allow you to better focus your energy on your work.

The Internet can be another issue for many people working at home. You cannot take the Internet off of your office computer, since you likely need to use it for work purposes. However, there are many ways that you can focus your use of the Internet in order to be more productive. Try downloading one of the many add-ons to your Internet browser to limit your use of websites that are unrelated to work. If you enjoy using social media websites or shopping online try to schedule time outside of your working hours for these activities so that you do not feel deprived while you are supposed to be working.

Remember To Take Breaks To Stay Fresh

It may sound counterproductive to time management, but the best way to stay on track while working may be to make time to take a break during the day. Working for several hours uninterrupted can be a recipe for stress, discomfort and aggravation. If you need to employ a high level of creativity in your work it is especially important to stay fresh while you are working. Try to force yourself to step away from your desk at least once during your day, perhaps during your lunch break, in order to allow your mind to clear. You will return to your work refreshed and ready to tackle your tasks with a new outlook.

Working from home means that you are not limited to eating at your desk like people working at normal offices. Take a longer lunch and meet a friend for pedicures or go for a walk with your dog. Getting some exercise is a terrific way to keep your body comfortable during long days seated at your desk and your mind open to new ideas while working.
